The Macquarie Valley is located in
Central Western NSW and is well known for being one of Australia's
premium farming districts.
It is our intention to showcase the valley as an interesting and
exciting area to visit by highlighting the diverse farming practices
which are used throughtout the valley. The aim of this project is
to organise a celebration of Macquarie Valley
food and fibre, encompassing lifestyle, production and the final
produce.
The Macquarie Valley was originally
formed as a sheep and cattle grazing area, with many top class Merino
Studs developing in the area including the famous "Egelabra"
and "Haddon Rig" studs.
The area also has a strong broad acre cropping sector that produces
wheat, barley, canola, sunflowers to name just a few of the crops
grown in the vallley. In recent years, many farms have developed
irrigated crops, notably cotton.
There is a large citrus growing commumity, as well as some new
and emerging industries such as olives, avocadoes and grapes for
winemaking. We also have several flower farms in the district including
iris, lavender and roses.
